FURTHER UPDATES

To keep up with South Gloucestershire Council’s latest news regarding the Badminton Road Overbridge closures, regularly check their A432 Badminton Road M4 Overbridge Closure webpage.

Update: 08/08/2023

On the 8th of August, the South Gloucestershire Council Streetcare team posted the following update on their Facebook page:

“Work is starting on 14 August to improve the Henfield Road junction, Yate, while National Highways continues to carry out its inspection of the M4 overbridge.
Our StreetCare teams will be replacing the current temporary lights at Westerleigh Road/ Henfield Road with more efficient regular traffic lights.
Work will last approximately three weeks and will mean Henfield Road will be closed overnight from 8pm to 6am for the first week.
The new traffic lights will go live before Monday 4 September to help alleviate the increased traffic flows expected when children return to school.
The new traffic lights will be removed when the A432 reopens.
People are still advised to carry out diversion route suggested by National Highways below.
• Northbound via the B4465 Westerleigh Road up to A46 and into Yate via A432
• Southbound in reverse
National Highways is also encouraging all traffic to use the A420 and A46 for Yate from the Hicks Gate direction on the A4174, and motorway users to use the M4 junction 18 for Yate, rather than the M32 and A4174.”

Badminton Road Overbridge Closure

South Gloucestershire Council (SGC) have released an update regarding the closures of the A432 Badminton Road overbridge closures.

How Long Will Badminton Road Overbridge Be Closed?

The Badminton Road overbridge was closed at 7pm on July 12th 2023. The reason SGC have given for the closures was the discovery of “accelerated deterioration and cracking” on the structure.

SGC have furthermore stated that the bridge must “remain closed to all motorists” until the necessary investigations and assessments have been completed. These investigations are necessary for determining the extent of the work required.

In terms of a timeline for how long the road will remain closed to motorists, SGC said that the “earliest a decision can be made [ … ] is likely to be December 2023“, whilst the One Network estimates that the closures will remain in place until February 2024.

Badminton Road Overbridge Diversions

The diversion routes currently recommended by SGC are:

  • northbound via the B4465 Westerleigh Road up to A46 and into Yate via A432;
  • southbound in reverse.

SGC have also released a recommended diversions map:

The National Highways have recommended that motorists use the A420 and A46 for Yate from the Hicks Gate direction on the A4174, and to use the M4 Junction 18 for Yate on the motorway rather than the M32 and the A4174.

Hambrook Traffic Lights Junction

Regarding the right turning at the Hambrook traffic lights on the ring road, South Gloucestershire Council have said that these will remain closed, as”the arrangements in place are the most efficient way of moving traffic through the junction“. However, SGC will continue to monitor the situation, and have said that if members of the public wish to report congestion, they may do so by contacting the StreetCare Team on A432bridgeclosure@southglos.gov.uk or 01454 868000.

National Highways
