Climate & Nature Committee
Vision
The Climate & Nature Committee was created in 2021 with the aim to protect and enhance nature and the environment across Frampton Cotterell and beyond. The committee has created a 3-year Local Climate & Nature Action Plan to fulfil this aim and guide projects.
The committee meets every other month in person, and informally every other month online (informal) to discuss ideas. All welcome to get involved!
Objectives
Frampton Cotterell Climate and Nature Committee aims to protect and enhance nature and our environment through the following objectives from our Local Climate & Nature Action Plan:
- To reduce our local carbon footprint and promote waste reduction
- To increase connectivity through the creation of wildlife corridors and habitats
- To facilitate stronger collaborative working with stakeholders
- To understand the current species and habitats across the village
- To increase community engagement and communication
- To ensure climate and nature issues are incorporated into the parish council decision making process
- To address and highlight the climate and nature emergency
- To protect areas of Green Belt across the parish and to promote brownfield redevelopment over greenfield development.
Funding
Our Climate & Nature projects are mainly funded through Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) and The Grange Solar Farm grants. Grants are also applied for through various other sources, such as the National Lottery.

Hedgehog Heroes Here Volunteer Group
The Hedgehog Heroes Here is a volunteer group that works in collaboration with Frampton Cotterell and Westerleigh & Coalpit Heath parish councils.
Made up of local people with a passion for nature, the Hedgehog Heroes work together with parish councils and local volunteers to find ways to raise awareness and protect hedgehogs in the local area. By coming up with ideas for projects, plans and campaigns and by offering informed feedback and advice, the Hedgehog Heroes Here working group is able to support the parish council in their decision- and policy-making processes.
Learn more about the Hedgehog Heroes on our Hedgehog Heroes Here page.
Climate & Nature Plans, Projects & Policies
Climate & Nature Action Plan
We recently finished the 2021 plan and have now created our bigger and better Local Climate & Nature Action Plan 2025-2028!
We welcome your feedback and suggestions on this plan, which will be regularly reviewed. This action plan was created with the help of the South Glos. Council Local Nature Action Plan Guidance.
Climate & Nature Emergency Declaration
Frampton Cotterell Parish Council has declared a Climate & Nature Emergency. In November 2023, the parish council made this declaration to show commitment to the environment and becoming net zero by 2030.
Please see our Climate Emergency Declaration for further details.
Environment Policy
To support the Climate & Nature Emergency Declaration, in 2024 the Parish Council approved a new Environment Policy.
Community Nature Reserve
The Frampton Cotterell Community Nature Reserve is a joint project by Frampton Cotterell Nature and Frampton Cotterell Parish Council.
The aim of this Community Nature Reserve is to help people work together to make more space for nature! From private gardens to public green spaces, the Community Nature Reserve seeks to create a network of wildlife-friendly spaces across our local area.
Learn more, and sign up to join this project, on our Community Nature Reserve webpage.
Hedgehog Watch
In collaboration with Westerleigh & Coalpit Heath parish council and our Hedgehog Heroes Here group, Frampton Cotterell Parish Council invites you to get involved with our new wildlife initiative: Hedgehog Watch!
By taking part in our Hedgehog Watch, you can help the Hedgehog Heroes collect important data on local hedgehogs. The information you provide here will be used by the Hedgehog Heroes and local parish councils to help set targets and develop action plans for protecting hedgehogs from the threat of extinction.
To get involved, all you need to do is be on the look out for hedgehogs and then send us your findings! We are looking for information on:
- The location of the hedgehog;
- The date you saw the hedgehog;
- Whether the hedgehog was alive – and if not, whether it was roadkill;
- Any other information you think might be useful!
Share your findings on our online Hedgehog Watch form or by emailing your notes to wildlife@framptoncotterell-pc.gov.uk.

Frampton Cotterell Species Lists
Founder of the Frampton Cotterell Nature Group (and now Frampton Cotterell Parish Council’s own Wildlife Officer!) David Hanks compiled a series of Frampton Cotterell Species Lists. There are some really exciting finds – definitely worth a browse!
Have you spotted any of the species on these lists, or taken any local photos?
If you have any information or images to share with us, please email us on wildlife@framptoncotterell-pc.gov.uk, or send a message or leave a comment on our Facebook, Instagram, or X (formerly Twitter).
Biodiversity Management Plans
In 2021, Frampton Cotterell Parish Council implemented a grassland and woodland management plan for Centenary Field to help nature thrive. Read the full management plans at:
Rewilding Frampton Cotterell
“Rewilding” or returning to nature doesn’t just mean reintroducing big species such as wolves and beavers. It can be as simple as embracing messy areas in your garden. A pile of old leaves isn’t clutter – it could be a home for a hedgehog or a hiding place for insects!
Frampton Cotterell Parish Council are working on rewilding projects of our own. For example, we decided to leave a border of long grass around the Centenary Field to grow, only cutting it once every 3 years. This will allow wildlife to use the longer grass for shelter.
Check out Rewilding Britain for more tips on making your garden wilder.
