The parish council would love to say a huge thank you to the crew of Yate Fire Station for helping us fill up our newly finished nature pond at Centenary Field on Friday!
After a group of our brilliant nature volunteers helped us finish lining the pond to make it watertight at the end of March, Yate Fire Brigade paid us a visit on the first weekend of April to help us fill the pond with water.
The fantastic fire crew spent a couple of hours with us on this sunny afternoon. They were assisted by our Nature and Wildlife Officers and some of our parish councillors – including Cllr. Lankester with one of our favourite four-legged helpers, Dylan the Dog.
Our pond project has been a long work in progress, and we have faced several unexpected challenges during the work – not least the discovery that the soil was far less clayey, far more gravelly, and substantially less watertight than our initial test pits suggested!
Getting to this crucial stage of filling up the pond is a real achievement, and we are so grateful to everyone who has helped make this project a reality, from our amazing volunteers and hard-working staff to the brilliant crew at Yate Fire Station. Thank you, all!
This pond will eventually provide a huge boost to local nature and biodiversity, creating a much-needed water-source and habitat to help local plants and wildlife thrive.
The next steps in the pond project will include trimming the pond liner and planting some pond plants.
