West of England Joint Spatial Plan

The four West of England Councils – Bath and North East Somerset, Bristol City, North Somerset, and South Gloucestershire are working together to produce a West of England Joint Spatial Plan (JSP) which will set out a prospectus for sustainable growth to help the Region meet its housing and transport needs for the next 20 years, to 2036.

The JSP is the first such joint planning approach in the UK, which takes into account the impact that development in one area has across council boundaries. The JSP will set out the policies and principles that have been applied in determining the most appropriate and sustainable locations for future development. The plan is the product of more than two years joint working and three previous consultations, where individuals, communities and stakeholders have made contributions to help shape the future growth of the region.

The Joint Spatial Plan (JSP) was submitted to the Secretary of State on the 13th April 2018. On this date the JSP entered the ‘examination stage’.  It is during this stage where the independent Inspector(s) review the plan and its supporting evidence base and determine whether the plan is sound and therefore ready to be adopted.

This stage involves examination Hearing sessions, led by the inspectors, in which members of the public and officers of the authorities will be invited by the Inspectors to participate on specific matters to assist the Inspector in considering the policies and principles set within the JSP. Which are intended to take place in spring 2019.

As part of the inspectors’ initial review of the JSP, additional work has been requested to be made public. The additional evidence consultation can be found on the Technical Evidence Work Consultation, November 2018.
