A rural walk across fields, through woods and along country lanes. Wonderful views across the pretty Frome Valley with a peek at delightful Iron Acton Village before heading toward Tubbs Bottom, visiting a cave, following a section of the Frome Valley Walkway and returning via Frampton End Lane. Couple of stiles and a few steps. Can be muddy and slippery after rain so sturdy footwear advised. Pub refreshments available. 4 miles.
The Route – Iron Acton Village
Start at St Peter’s Church.
-
Walk a short distance along Mill Lane and follow footpath sign on right through gate and over bridge.
-
Go through a smaller gate & turn Left into field, heading up a slight hill (there used to be a brick factory here – see the uneven ground. The ruins & chimney disappeared after 1970s).
-
Enter next field and head for far right-hand corner (past opening to adjacent field), where a muddy track ((hidden from view till you’re near), after a short distance, takes you to Hover’s Lane.
-
Turn Left and almost immediately turn Right into field to go anti-clockwise round edge of field but, if this is highly rutted, return to continue along Hover’s Lane; round bend and look for farm gate on right. Go through gap beside gate.
-
Follow track along edge of field, slightly uphill, watching for kissing gate on left to enter horses’ field.
-
Follow path across horses’ field, via 2 stiles to then go over 3rd stile near tall trees & house and turn Left onto road.
-
Follow road across bridge and round to left, passing Algars Manor on your right and crossing railway.
-
At end of lane, continue straight for a few metres and take the 2nd footpath on right.
-
This bends to left to bring you onto Iron Acton High Street. Turn Right and view the village houses etc as you head for the Church.
-
Turn Right into the churchyard and follow the footpath behind the church, keeping left and with houses on your left.
-
After a short distance behind the houses, turn Right over a stile/gate to follow a path across field.
-
Up steps, across railway, down steps
-
Turn immediately Right and head for farm gate to go through gap or over stile.
-
Turn immediately Left into Chill Woods, keeping left and taking 2nd trodden narrower path on Left (avoid uphill slope to right which would bring you on top of cave & mean a steep downhill bit)
-
Follow this path through woods, passing a little cave on right and opening out onto open grass.
-
Climb bank and cross river at Tubbs Bottom Weir and turn immediately Right to continue along Frome Valley footpath which meanders to road.
-
Turn Left onto Frampton End Road, watching out for traffic as you follow this narrow twisting road for approx 1⁄2 mile.
-
A short way after passing Tubbs Bottom Lane (on left), and at a sharp right bend, turn off left (straight ahead) to follow footpath behind houses before rejoining the road again.
-
Turn left into road (beware of traffic) and walk to end of road.
-
Turn Right into Church Road and continue down to St Peter’s Church.
