Village Action Walks: Algars Manor

Village Action Walks: Algars Manor

Starting at the Centenary Field, which was purchased for the parish to mark the 100th anniversary of the civil parish of Frampton Cotterell, this walk leads northwards along the Frome Valley Walkway towards Algars Manor, Iron Acton. Return via fields with fine views towards the Welsh Hills and part of the former railway embankment which linked the iron mine in Frampton Cotterell to Iron Acton.

Can be muddy and lots of stiles!

The Route – Frome Valley to Algars Manor

Start at St Peter’s Church.

  1. Walk along Mill Lane, passing allotments and turn left along footpath beside these (before Drew’s small steel foundry) and into Centenary Field via kissing gate. Follow path to right and go through another kissing gate into farm field, still keeping right to follow trodden path round edge of field beside river (which may not yet be visible if lots of growth).

  2. If fairly dry, there’s a gap on right to go down, veer Left & walk beside river for a short distance. Keep straight ahead down mud path beside river (take care with low branches & muddy bank. At some point this becomes eroded/flooded so go up bank onto field to continue in same direction. Continue ahead between bushes/trees to follow beside river (take care – continual erosion).

  3. Turn Right to go across the metal footbridge and then Left to continue on trodden path that runs round edge of field (soon parallel with road which is other side of hedge).

  4. Continue over 2 steep stiles either side of Hover’s Lane (near ford).

  5. Continue to follow path that goes around the edge of the field, over a couple of stiles & through small wood before climbing 2 stiles and up to cross the river on a former railway bridge, 2 stiles & a few steps back down to the riverbank.

  6. Path goes between river & Ridge Farm lawn, then climbs away from the river up to go through a kissing gate or stile onto road.

  7. Turn Right into Frampton End Rd, past Algars Manor on Left, over stone bridge crossing the river.

    1. As road bends left, turn Right toward house and keep left of the house to climb stile into field. Continue to follow this through horse field, over stiles and through kissing gate to go across top edge of field of crops (don’t take Right alternative).

  8. Through Kissing gate in corner of field. Continue ahead, following path with hedge on your right.

  9. Go through kissing gate into Hovers lane & then straight ahead into Frampton End Rd & follow this for 100m or so. Turn Right over stile, signed to St Peters Church.

  10. Head straight for gap or kissing gate in front (across muddy section) and then straight ahead to another kissing gate.

  11. Head for woods & turn Right in front of them, following round the edge of woods.

  12. This brings you to a path (on left) along the disused iron mine railway embankment.

  13. At end of path, follow down steep bank on Right, through gate and then across field to gate.

  14. Go through 2 gates (or stile & gate if 1st gate locked), over bridge & another gate takes you back to Mill Lane.

  15. Turn Left to return to church.
